"We Are Enlightened Entrepreneurs"

Since the Occupy Wall Street movement began, the article below was anonymously written. One of my dear clients sent it to me. It’s been circulating around ‘the Street’ and many insurance companies, wending its way to many who serve financial markets from estate attorneys to CPAs and beyond. People either smirk with pride or shake their head with grim acceptance after reading it. I wrote the response that follows.  Let me know your thoughts...

We are Wall Street…we are smarter and more vicious than dinosaurs.

“We are Wall Street. It’s our job to make money. Whether it’s a commodity, stock, bond, or some hypothetical piece of fake paper, it doesn’t matter. We would trade baseball cards if it were profitable. I didn’t hear America complaining when the market was roaring to 14,000 and everyone’s 401k doubled every 3 years. Just like gambling, it’s not a problem until you lose. I’ve never heard of anyone going to Gamblers Anonymous because they won too much in Vegas.

Well now the market crapped out, & even though it has come back somewhat, the government and the average Joes are still looking for a scapegoat. God knows there has to be one for everything. Well, here we are.

Go ahead and continue to take us down, but you’re only going to hurt yourselves. What’s going to happen when we can’t find jobs on the Street anymore? Guess what: We’re going to take yours. We get up at 5am & work till 10pm or later. We’re used to not getting up to pee when we have a position. We don’t take an hour or more for a lunch break. We don’t demand a union. We don’t retire at 50 with a pension. We eat what we kill, and when the only thing left to eat is on your dinner plates, we’ll eat that.

For years teachers and other unionized labor have had us fooled. We were too busy working to notice. Do you really think that we are incapable of teaching 3rd graders and doing landscaping? We’re going to take your cushy jobs with tenure and 4 months off a year and whine just like you that we are so-o-o-o underpaid for building the youth of America. Say goodbye to your overtime and double time and a half. I’ll be hitting grounders to the high school baseball team for $5k extra a summer, thank you very much.

So now that we’re going to be making $85k a year without upside, Joe Mainstreet is going to have his revenge, right? Wrong! Guess what: we’re going to stop buying the new 80k car, we aren’t going to leave the 35 percent tip at our business dinners anymore. No more free rides on our backs. We’re going to landscape our own back yards, wash our cars with a garden hose in our driveways. Our money was your money. You spent it. When our money dries up, so does yours.

The difference is, you lived off of it, we rejoiced in it. The Obama administration and the Democratic National Committee might get their way and knock us off the top of the pyramid, but it’s really going to hurt like hell for them when our fat a**es land directly on the middle class of America and knock them to the bottom.

We aren’t dinosaurs. We are smarter and more vicious than that, and we are going to survive. The question is, now that Obama & his administration are making Joe Mainstreet our food supply…will he? And will they?”

We are Enlightened Entrepreneurs. It is our job to create value. While you pride yourself on thinking it doesn’t matter what fake paper you trade, it actually does. I’m sure you would trade not only baseball cards, but virtually anything that could make you money. But you forgot something...real investing isn’t about gambling, it’s about wisdom. That means applying knowledge, experience and understanding to serve people (but since you speak Tyrannosaurus Rex, that probably doesn’t compute).

Yes, the market crapped out. Why? Because you and most Americans took a stupid pill and violated the Natural Laws this country was founded on. Yeah the ‘Occupy Wall Streeters’ are misguided in blaming you as their scapegoat, because each one of them is personally responsible for a bunch of bad decisions that led them to their drum circle beneath the flag.  But dude c’mon, you guys believe in max profit and in earning it by stretching the rules as long as you don’t get caught, and you know it. You write ‘God knows there has to be a scapegoat for everything?' God? To Wall Street and the government, if God exists He has “In Money We Trust” tattooed on his forehead.

You better hope no one is keeping score because some karma is about to run over your dogma.  Here’s why...

You scoff at ethical concepts of Enlightened Entrepreneurship like

1. People are assets

2. Purpose counts

3. Principles matter

4. Profit validates value created in the marketplace

While those ideals sound passive, gullible and weak to an unconscious capitalist, they actually produce more revenue for all stakeholders.

You aren’t Wall Street. It is an ideal bigger than you and I. It is a symbol of free market innovation and genius that no one has the power to destroy but Americans themselves. Hussein and Bin laden tried to take it down...how’d that work out for them? Our current president and liberal tax-hikers and over-regulators don’t have the power to do it because there are enough independent thinkers in this country who are about to fire them. They’re one and done. It is the enlightened entrepreneurs in the U.S. who are the real source of currency in America

It is we who are still creating real value and real jobs.

Intentionally waxing patriotic, I remind you that you’ve been entrusted with a sacred duty. You’re privy to a primary flow of information that affects the lives of real people in the secondary market. It is an important service that needs doing and we’re counting on your integrity. You get paid the big bucks to serve that ideal honorably.  Think about that tonight when you hit the bong and/or the scotch to help you sleep. (Do even self-proclaimed ‘vicious dinosaurs’ have a conscience?)

I know some of you are ethical, and I agree you guys work really hard and have off-the-charts Mensa scores. But your level of emotional intelligence and spiritual consciousness is low. Really low. Not that those qualities have any current relevance to you, but as your hubris inevitably pushes you deeper into darkness, look those two things up. I also agree that the unions and pensions that once served us have, in some cases, made us weak. But you cite 'holding a pee' and taking 'half-hour lunches' as impressive?  What impresses me is a single mom who works and raises three kids by herself, not someone who eats leftover dinner from someone else’s plate. Was it you who macked the leftover room service I left outside my door last week at the Marriott?

Do I think you’re incapable of teaching 3rd graders and doing landscaping? No. You could, you just wouldn’t be very good at it because you think it’s beneath you. Oh sure, you’d be a good boy for a little while until the kids bore you into justifying hitting on the kindergarten teacher or planting Mr. Weinberg’s new Japanese maple in your own backyard. Hey once you’ve established the “kill what you eat” mindset, it’s a hard habit to break isn’t it?

I agree you are smarter and more vicious than dinosaurs. I’m certain you’ll survive President Obama, the unions, Joe Mainstreet, the economy, and the blaming masses you sneer at. The question is, will you survive yourself?

The Power of Meditation

Meditation is one of the most powerful tools available to man to transcend the mind and to prevent and ease suffering in the world.

Meditation accesses a state of consciousness called collective super-consciousness. This is the uniting connection between God External, God within you, and the God-Self within others.

The lower mind is fear, and is thus based in force. The higher mind is love, and is thus based in power.

Meditation provides the most thorough means by which a person can experience transcending the lower mind.

When the mind is transcended, happiness is 99 percent guaranteed. The term “Love Meditation” is symbolic of this understanding.

“Spiritual meditation is the pathway to Divinity. It is the mystic ladder which reaches from earth to heaven, from error to Truth, from pain to peace. "Every saint has climbed it; every sinner must sooner or later come to it, and every weary pilgrim that turns his back upon self and the world, and sets his face resolutely toward the Father's Home, must plant his feet upon its golden rounds. "Without its aid you cannot grow into the divine state, the divine likeness, the divine peace, and the fadeless glories and purifying joys of Truth will remain hidden from you.” -James Allen

Meditation Affects the World Around You

Through meditation, we enter a collective global consciousness of other divine beings, both in the physical and non-physical world, who are holding a sacred space.

Numerous studies have shown that meditation can in reality influence the tangible world for good.

In 1983, a daily study of a two-month assembly in Israel showed that on days when the number of participants in the meditation group was high, war deaths in neighboring Lebanon dropped by 76 percent. Other possible causes, such as weekends, holidays, weather, etc. were statistically taken into consideration as a part of the control. These results were subsequently replicated in seven consecutive experiments over a two-year period during the peak of the Lebanon war.

The results of these interventions included:

  • War-related fatalities decreased by 71 percent.
  • War-related injuries fell by 68 percent.
  • The level of conflict dropped by 48 percent.
  • and Cooperation among antagonists increased by 66 percent.

The likelihood that these combined results were due to chance is less than one part in 1,019, making this effect of reducing societal stress and conflict the most rigorously established phenomenon in the history of the social sciences (Source: Journal of Social Behavior and Personality, 2005, Volume 17, Number 1, pages 285-338).

Meditation has erroneously been misperceived as weird eastern mysticism. Yet all people have experienced its benefits without even taking notice.

Have you ever sat staring out a window, not focusing on anything in particular, in a peaceful state of being “spaced out?” This might have happened to you while sitting in the car waiting for someone, watching traffic and people pass by in a state of non-attached awareness.

No problems or worries exist in this place — it is peaceful, blissful, and calming. Then something snapped you back into normal consciousness, and you resumed the normal pattern of thinking without noticing how good it felt to take a break from lower mind.

This preliminary experience is like dipping your toe into the ocean — when it comes to the enormity of the power that can be accessed through meditation. Meditation is the spiritual discipline that people seem to struggle most with. This is because you confront the chaos of the ego-thinking mind face-to-face.

Its job is to derail your efforts towards meditating, and in most people, it is successful.

Connecting With the Divine

Prayer is speaking to God, while meditation is listening to God.

If you listen to God, the ego dies. It therefore considers meditation as a threat to its existence.

This results in the ego turning up the volume on the intensity of the thought process. It is similar to changing stations on your radio, and encountering loud static until you tune in to the new station.

You are moving from the lower ego-mind to the Higher God-mind. It is possible to listen to God, to become aware of God’s Divine Will for us, and for our lives to evolve.

Watching the mind in meditation is like walking into a giant 10,000-square foot warehouse that is totally empty, except for two men unexpectedly arguing in one small corner. Where does your attention go, and what does it become engrossed with? The argument.

In meditation we are aware of the argument (as noisy thoughts), but finally realize we cannot stop it. It is really none of our business, for the two men arguing in the mind represent the twin aspects of the ego — which are fear and desire.

By intentionally playing the role of the Observer/Chooser we merely witness it, and then choose to shift our attention to the G.A.P.—the God-Self Awareness Point.

This G.A.P. is like a high-speed Internet connection that links your individual computer to billions of other computers and trillions of bits of knowledge in cyberspace. Meditation links your individual consciousness to Infinite Consciousness.

In meditation we are the Observer/Chooser — observing the noise, but choosing instead to focus on and expand the space, thus creating a direct connection with the spiritual realm.

This is a monumental accomplishment in the soul’s evolution — choosing to turn around and look at the vast empty space in the warehouse of the mind, instead of being obsessed with fear and desire.

In the warehouse of the mind, you must learn to focus on the power of the space, instead of the chaos of the thoughts. Soon we realize the space is not empty (a vacuum), but rather it is full (a plenum) of possibilities.

As you master this inner space, you can then manifest your Soul Purpose in your outer space. Once we realize the inner space is filled with Love, we can then externalize that Love into our work.

We can then fill the outer space with anything — a dance studio, an office building, a bookstore, a metal fabrication shop, an artist’s loft — it is the doorway to an infinite realm of creative possibility.

Meditation connects you to your imagination, which is the genesis for all invention throughout history. This is precisely why Einstein said “Imagination is far superior to knowledge.” He called this realm the “quantum realm of probability,” but in simpler terms, it appears to be an infinite field of possibility.

It is via this connection to the Infinite that your Soul Purpose can be downloaded as you meditate.

Hard/Easy, Easy/Hard

Before we learn the disciplines, it’s critical that the “hard-easy/easy-hard” concept is understood.

“Hard-easy” refers to those things in life that initially appear to be difficult, yet in the long run they make life much easier and more enjoyable.

On the other hand, “easy-hard” refers to things that seem easy at first yet lead to far more difficulties down the road.

For example, suppose a young boy steals a candy bar from a store. He did so because he thought that it would be easier to steal than to earn the money to buy the candy bar.

However, it’s clear that if he develops a habit of theft, life will end up being much more difficult for him (easy-hard).

On the other hand, telling the truth and facing the consequences may seem like the hard thing to do, but will make his life so much easier as he develops (hard-easy).

The Law of Discipline means that we must consistently apply “hard-easy” in our lives in order to succeed, whereby doing the hard thing first makes the rest of your life easier.

Conversely, doing the easy thing first makes the rest of your life hard.

Notice that the word “discipline” has “disciple” as its word root, alluding to the sacred nature of its meaning. In Latin, the word disciplare means “to teach.” By applying the Law of Discipline we are actually going through a sacred teaching as we re-pattern our lives to become disciplined.

In this context you can see why the ego hates discipline, especially new spiritual ones that could signal its demise.

Thus it works particularly hard to derail these efforts. It is lazy and always prompts us to procrastinate or get distracted until suffering forces us to produce out of fear, but clearly fear is not a very long-term productivity motivator.

“However strong a castle may be, if a treacherous party resides inside (ready to betray at the first opportunity possible), the castle cannot be kept safe from the enemy. Traitors occupy our own hearts, ready to side with every temptation and to surrender to them all.” -John Owen

In the ascending mode, expect pain as you input new disciplines into your life. This is because the ego shuns discipline and works very hard to convince you that it is ridiculous and unworthy of your time and energy.

As you commit to doing these “hard” tasks, the thought stream will throw all sorts of obstacles at you, so be seriously diligent with your willingness to surrender all these negativities to God as they arise.

Though you are still going uphill, doing so will create traction and momentum.

Next, be prepared for a bit of backsliding both mentally and emotionally, for as any mountain climber knows, it is part of the ascending process.

Stay the course — this is normal and to be expected. As you persist with your new habit, it will not only get easier, but will begin to bear fruit in the form of profit.

This exciting phase typically signals that you are reaching the development phase in which the habit is now written into the hard drive of your subconscious mind.

Once this happens, you begin a descending arc towards greater life success. What was once painful now becomes pleasurable and satisfying.

Soul Purpose Versus Life Purpose

While your Soul Purpose may take the form of a specific career, such as a teacher, or a police officer, the motivation behind that comes from your soul — not money, fame, or security.

In other words, Soul Purpose is more about why you choose a job or career, and less about the specific, external form it takes at any given moment.

Soul Purpose is also differentiated from “life purpose.” While the two labels appear to be interchangeable, they are not. Life purpose is about “me” (ego-self), while Soul Purpose is about “us” (God-Self).

Many people are awakening to the idea of living life with purpose, but all too few are realizing their dreams because life purpose and Soul Purpose are distinctively different.

Life purpose has become associated with getting, attaining, and achieving something that people believe is outside of themselves.

Soul Purpose is totally the opposite; it is about giving, surrendering and relinquishing.

You surrender and relinquish the ego stories so that the innate talents within your soul matrix shine forth and are given away. At first they are to be given away, but eventually you will be paid to provide your product and/or service.

Understanding Soul Purpose

For most, the idea of life purpose still evokes ideas that you only do what you love and you will become rich by doing it. It is you still telling God what you think you should be.

Soul Purpose comes from doing spiritual work to the degree that you become still enough to hear what God built you to be.

Life purpose is the “Think and Grow Rich” model that says “you can have and be whatever you want” through effort and achievement; Soul Purpose is a higher-consciousness model that helps you surrender to become who you were born to become through love.

Ironically, surrendering to Soul Purpose will actually help you achieve far more in life than pursuing life purpose. Misunderstanding arises about Soul Purpose because of the misperception that living Soul Purpose automatically guarantees fame and fortune.

This is a fallacy perpetuated by the ego. Some people’s Soul Purpose appears to be bigger and more important than others, but this is untrue. Soul Purpose roles that thrust people into the spotlight are no more important than any other—they are merely more visible. It appeals to the basic human ego structure that fame and fortune indicate superior social importance, but this is not so.

A mother can live her Soul Purpose merely by being an exceptionally committed parent who lovingly nurtures and cherishes her children. A traffic cop who loves what he does and performs his job with zeal, fulfillment, and precision is just as important to the world as is the president of a country.

Who was more important—George Washington, or his mother who is rarely, if ever, spoken of? Gandhi, or his wife? Thomas Jefferson, or his mentor, George Wythe, whom few people have heard of?

Soul Purpose As Catalyst

Team members whose Soul Purpose is supporting an onstage person in more "visible" Soul Purpose roles are critical and necessary. These support people are sometimes more highly evolved than the famous person.

Because they may be more spiritually advanced, they prefer the anonymity and peacefulness of their role and need no fame or fortune while relishing their simple life. My lovely wife Anathea is a perfect example of this.

The thought of presenting in front of a group makes her sick to her stomach, yet she operates our household with ease, grace, and charm. She feels completely fulfilled by serving me and our children and by beautifying our home.

She is the consummate supporter, constantly tying up my loose strings, taking care of details that I often overlook, and making sure I remember important things. She’s always serving others as well, in a quiet, unassuming way that she doesn’t even recognize as a major contribution (although I do).

She’s a person that others rely on for favors; they know that they can always count on her. Anathea says,

“My Soul Purpose at the moment is being a mother. I’m perfectly content raising my kids and it’s very important to me that I raise them, rather than them being raised by nannies or daycares. Much of my purpose is the result of my upbringing." "Since I didn’t have the happiest childhood, it’s important for me that my children have a happy childhood. Growing up, my home life was somewhat crazy, so it’s become important for me to have order in my life. I also love maintaining traditions because I believe that traditions make for happy memories.”

I’m the one people know, but my wife is the humble, supportive partner that enables my gifts to shine. Without her I would not be nearly as effective. In this sense, support roles are the catalyst for all other Soul Purposes.

The advanced teacher may live what appears to be a simple life, but the love radiating from such a high soul uplifts all of humanity. Mother Teresa was an excellent example of this truth. Because of the enormous diversity of what is necessary on Earth for world peace, every Soul Purpose well-lived is critical and important. In this context, one can see how fame and fortune may be irrelevant.

Therefore, monetary wealth may or may not be present, or necessary, in the life of many such souls. Because high public visibility is an unpleasant idea to many, it may or may not happen, and to the advanced teacher means nothing.

To these souls, money is mainly used to help others, to maintain privacy, and to expand the reach of their loving message.

Where to Find Soul Purpose

Soul Purpose is your unique series of talents, strengths, passions, interests, hobbies, attitudes and values that form the essence of the most magnificent version of you.

When these qualities are intentionally acknowledged and cultivated, they coalesce into a specific mission in service to the world.

These qualities already exist within you in a basic raw form. For most people they need to be clearly discovered, then nourished, studied and refined.

Soul purpose is like gold: hidden deep within, but when painstakingly sought for and carefully mined, it makes for fabulous wealth.

The common denominator of all successful and famous people throughout history is that they all lived their Soul Purpose. They all "followed their bliss" –- daring, many times against impossible odds, to be that which they believed they were destined to become.

This bliss led them to do what they had an innate passion and talent for. Their cause became a life mission –- a raison d’etre. They rarely set out to achieve fame and fortune.

On the contrary, fame and fortune occurred as "effects," stemming from each person following their inborn "cause." This cause became their guiding beacon whenever fear, doubt and worry assailed them. It guided them to have faith, and the will to persist in times of challenge.

Recognizing Soul Purpose

Most people come to recognize the relevance and validity of Soul Purpose only after experiencing great discontentment. This discontentment stems from not living their life with purpose.

They know they’re here to do something important but all they can say is that they’re definitely not doing it.

Thus, discontentment is the fuel that propels people towards the discovery of this concept. We come to soul purpose by discovering who we are not, and do not, want to be and do.

Thus it is important to also address what soul purpose is not:

  • a job
  • a career
  • about money
  • about fame
  • about material things
  • without struggle
  • glamorous
  • indicative of any "specialness"
  • worty of adulation

The phrase Soul Purpose is derived from realizing that you are a soul in a body who has a mind. While residing in a material body and using the mind as a computer for storing, retrieving and analyzing data, the soul is your true essence.

But because of very deeply ingrained cultural conditioning, we have forgotten the essence of that which we really are. This conditioning drastically hinders people’s belief in themselves and their possibilities in the world.

Consider: In India, elephants are still used for many heaving-lifting tasks. When the elephants are in training they are secured by a thick chain to a foot-wide steel shaft cemented deep into the ground.

As the trainer begins teaching them they initially pull and pull trying to free themselves, but after a couple weeks the elephant realizes it’s useless and stops pulling. From that point forward the trainer can lead them around by a string!

This massively strong creature has been conditioned for the rest of its life to never change, because of its early conditioning.

Human beings are very similar. This conditioning causes us to look at the world in a very fixed and limited way, without our even knowing it.

So we forget our essence and settle for a life of mediocrity. This is the root of why so many good people experience depression — their soul is so stifled that it is crying our for the expression of its real purpose.

Soul Purpose Resides in the Spiritual Realm

One of the most important, and misunderstood, concepts surrounding soul purpose is that it can only fully be lived when one accesses the spiritual realm.

Spirituality is a way of being that people choose, or do not choose, every moment of their existence. It is choosing to be, and to behave, as either the God-Self or the ego-self.

Studying the attributes to these two very different selves will be helpful for clarity sake.

God-Self Ego-Self
Love Fear
Confidence Worry
Faith Doubt
Learning Blaming
Serving Prideful
Humble Narcissistic
Asking Demanding
Empowering Controlling
Thy Way My Way

Thus, being spiritual is choosing love (power) over fear (force) when you are challenged. It is choosing to have faith instead of allowing ourselves to be filled with doubt when difficulties arise.

When things don’t go as planned the spiritual being focuses on learning instead of blaming, and so on with both categories of opposite qualities being virtually endless.

Spiritual people practice a series of disciplines that access the unseen domain I refer to as the spiritual realm -- the realm in which Soul Purpose resides fully formed.

Without accessing the spiritual realm, living one’s Soul Purpose is virtually impossible. Without doing the disciplines, it is unlikely for someone to live their Soul Purpose.

The spiritual realm is the place of highest possibility, the mental realm is the middle, and the physical realm is the lowest. People have access to, and always create from, one of three planes of potential.

Creating from the physical realm only dictates that we follow basic animal instincts, thus is the most limited realm.

Creating from the mental realm exponentially increases results because you have engaged a higher engine, which is the mind, and combined it with the chassis of the body. You are not only working hard (physical) but you are also working smart.

Creating from the spiritual realm is a quantum leap unlike any other. It combines all three realms; working hard and smart but driven by the indefatigable power of the God-self.

Achieving at Your Highest Level

The God-self provides us with an amazing aspiration to succeed because Soul Purpose is the thing you already most love to do. H2O can be seen as ice, water or steam depending on the intensity of its molecular speed.

Similarly, the human being can be physical, mental or spiritual depending on the intensity of aspiration to succeed.

Careful study of the following chart will illustrate the enormous difference between the potential results in productivity that are possible when creating from the spiritual realm.

Business Realm Business State Ethic Essence Process Style Model
Spiritual God-Self Work Mission Soul Being Creative Interdependent
Mental Ego-Self Work Smart Mind Thinking Proactive Independent
Physical Animal-Self Work Hard Body Doing Reactive Dependent

From my research, one year of physical work can create enough value for others to generate $20,000 of income. One year of working in the mental realm may create enough value for others to earn $200,000 of income. One year spent working from the spiritual realm of Soul Purpose can easily generate $2 million.

Notice the 10 times exponential growth that can occur due to the phenomenal leap in power as one transcends from the physical to the mental to the spiritual realm.

I've witnessed this with several of my clients. One of them in particular committed to his spiritual disciplines, and then created unique products and services that are now generating in excess of $2 million annually.

Climbing the Ladder

The quandary of the mental realm is that the mind convinces you that it is the pinnacle of human existence.

Everyone stuck in the mental realm secretly believes his beliefs are right and superior to others. That which was once the way out, has become the next impediment to be transcended.

You are a soul, in a body, who has a reasoning computer called a mind.

If you're not experiencing prosperity, you are probably trapped in the mind, and as such, do not have direct access to your Soul purpose.

In fact, so many people are trapped in their mind that they don’t even believe the soul exists, much less has a purpose.

To begin awakening to your Soul purpose, start by seeing yourself as the spirit in the body who has a mind, but is not the mind.
