Why the Law of Attraction Doesn't Work

One thing is certain about the way the Law of Attraction has been taught, and the way in which the great majority of people are using it: It just doesn't work.

Millions of people have seen or read The Secret and believe in the Law of Attraction, but have been disappointed with their poor results in using it.

I have been investigating this phenomenon long before the runaway success of the best-selling book and movie by Rhonda Byrne.

I've also compared notes with many of the teachers in the original movie, with whom I regularly associate as a member of the Transformational Leadership Council, whose members were the teachers featured in the movie. They mostly agree with me, with certain exceptions.

The premise of “The Law” is truly tantalizing: Whatever you think, if you think it hard enough and long enough and clearly enough, MANIFESTS!

But is this true?  It appears that within certain finite parameters, yes, and from an infinite perspective, NO!

Is it Even a Law?

Look at a pragmatic example which will make it very simple.

First, for something to be called a “law,” it must be true anywhere and everywhere at all times, and verifiably duplicable in any laboratory when its basic parameters are followed.

Consider the law of gravity, for example. Jump head first off a ten-story building onto concrete and you will fall at almost the exact same speed as everyone else and the body will die, virtually 100% of the time. It doesn't matter where you are, who you are, or whether you believe it or not—the law of gravity is real.

If you read my books or hear me speak, you'd get that I'm a metaphysical open-minded thinker.

But I love truth more than beliefs.

Beliefs vs. Truth

Beliefs are what might be true, what is hoped to be true, what one wishes to be true, and even fantasizes is truth. Beliefs might be, truth is.

If I visualize, affirm, meditate on, and pray for my goal of becoming an NBA basketball player, can I ever really "attract" it to happen? Facts: I am a 52-year-old 5'10" Caucasian male.

Some folks might get into new-agey rationalizations that my premise is flawed, and that I'm being negative to the degree that I'm violating the “law", but with any honesty, you know I'm not.

C'mon folks, Kareem Abdul Jabbar is roughly my age, and he was the greatest NBA center statistically. Don't you think he'd like to re-capture his heyday? Hell, YES! And if the Law of Attraction were true...he could.

I love the concept of the Law of Attraction, but I love truth more. To me, truth is God. I love truth beyond beliefs, because truth is what is, and the humble acceptance of it.

Vibration Precedes Attraction

In science there is a law called the "Law of Sympathetic Resonance." Experiment with it for yourself, because it is anywhere and everywhere always true.

You can verify it with any stringed musical instrument and a tuning fork. Say you were to take a guitar, and had a tuning fork tuned to middle A in the traditional tempered musical scale (440 CPS or hertz). If you tap the fork on your knee it vibrates, emanating invisible sound waves.

Now without touching the guitar strings, if you were to hold it close to the strings and move from one to the next, you’d hear nothing until you got to middle A string. Then, as if by magic, the string would “turn on” and make a sound without ever having been touched.

This is the scientific basis for the so-called Law of Attraction. So there is some truth to it, but here is the missing piece to why it works inconsistently.

There is a spiritual principle that profoundly influences the equation. Is the “law” being used for selfish reasons and individual gain, or for a moral and sacred purpose to serve others and alleviate suffering?

I believe the Law of Attraction is mis-named, because it puts the focus onto what the user gets out of the deal, which neglects a much more important ingredient: what they’re willing to give.

The key is not focusing on the attraction part of the equation; the key is focusing on getting your vibration right through powerful choices, thoughts, words, and by taking powerful action.

The Real Formula Begins with the Right Element

This ingredient begins by choosing a noble intention. Be honest and ask yourself, “Is my intention selfish or soul-fish?”

Your intention will deeply influence the end result. There is great proof of this fact in my friend Lynn McTaggart’s fine book entitled, The Intention Experiment.

In one of my books, The Prosperity Paradigm, I specifically address how to use what I call the Law of Vibration and Attraction in painstaking detail.

Being a productivity teacher in the financial services industry, I’ve seen far too many clients futilely try to apply the Law of Attraction to make more money.

They get their visualization boards, and their affirmations and the whole deal but they forget the most important premise: You gotta put something into the “bucket” before you can honestly expect to take something out of it.

Go serve somebody.

Create Favorable Conditions; Results Take Care of Themselves

Laws are mechanistic rules that operate predictably within controlled Newtonian parameters.

Principles seem to work best with organic systems like human beings. A principle isn't a law, which is irrefutable, but principles do work to create favorable conditions for a reality to actualize.

So if you're seeking to make more money, I suggest trying this principle: Begin with a good intention, using the equation Intention = Noble Goal + Non-attachment. (The non-attachment part is big, so big we’ll cover that in another blog soon.)

Then just BE the Cause, and make it a worthy cause that creates real value for others

In a world of cause and effect, value creation is the cause, money is the effect. Dollars follow value.

Strike the "tuning fork" of value creation in service to others first, and using this principle, chances are that the money will follow.

One more thing: progress towards, and realization of, a heartfelt, inner-self aligned desire, ALWAYS adds value to others. :)

Hi Steve, I think that you make some good points and ask some good questions, but if you don’t mind, I am going to post an alternative perspective under each of your headings. RE: The Secret... Many of the people who have seen the movie have seen the version that is minus the critically important piece that was contributed by Abraham-Hicks. This piece concerned the “Emotional Scale” and the role that emotion plays in the law of attraction. The reason why that bit was left out is found at this link:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CFp-iPSPplE&feature=related Those truly fluent in LOA theory and practice understand that you can’t fool the universe: it is your VIBRATION and not only what you visualize that attracts to you what happens. Your emotions are an indicator of where your vibration is. For example, if when you visualize something, you are feeling like it is difficult, or you are thinking thoughts that make you feel unworthy of what you are visualizing, you need to address the thoughts, emotion and vibration around that topic before you can have a hope of manifesting it positively from your vision. "Is it Even a Law?" "Beliefs vs. Truth" Beliefs are thoughts held over time. Facts are beliefs held over time. Truths are but facts held over time. Assumptions are “truths” that are no longer consciously examined with regularity. When I look at my life, I see the truth of where my vibration is everywhere around me. My life is a living oracle. What more evidence to I need to know the “truth” about the Law of Attraction? I can trace nearly everything in my life back to beliefs, habitual thoughts, my sense of self-value, and the intensity and focus of my desire.   "Vibration Precedes Attraction" While I agree 100% it is about the vibration more than desire or belief, both of the latter can boost or severely retard the activity and action of the former. Further, no amount of action in one direction can offset the direction of belief, desire, emotion, and vibration in another direction. Vibration trumps action; desire trumps belief, but for joy and wellbeing, alignment is key! Once more, there is no moral requirement. The requirement is that we *feel* good about, and worthy of, what we are asking for. It is important to know WHY we want what we want!   "The Real Formula Begins with the Right Element" Personally, I believe the “right element” is how you “feel” about what you are asking for and how that fits with your values, and NOT what your values are. If there is resistance to what you want based on some external standard, that will interfere with you realizing what you want. Real appropriateness is felt through the inner self, and does not depend on meeting some universal standard of goodness. For some, deliberate creation might prove easier when they align with existing values. For others, simply valuing the self enough to know what is appropriate and simply asking for what is really wanted without shame is all that is required. This does NOT mean that there is a nobel truth or quality that one has to meet to attract something. That said, my feeling is the best way to attract joy and wellbeing is to develop an *inner life* that if full of joy and wellbeing. Inner always becomes outer. There is no exception. Not surprisingly, many will experiment with attracting a variety of wants before settling on the direction of aligning inner life first. Contrast helps define preference and speeds us to self-knowledge. "Create Favorable Conditions; Results Take Care of Themselves" If you mean "create favorable *internal* conditions, I couldn't agree more. I suggest that if you want more money, you ask why. Once you get to the “why,” you begin to feel and think about that “WHY”—a lot. Once you know that “why,” begin to feel like you’d feel, if you had that” why” right now and all the time. Imagine scenarios with joy and a sense of fun that are all a result of that “why” alive and at work in your life. One day when you awake, or during breakfast, or a morning drive, you’ll feel a desire come up. It will feel different from the other desires in that it will have an emotional charge that is difficult to ignore. This desire might be something you’ve never thought of doing before, or might be a new twist or insight on something you’ve always had an interest in. It will be a desire to move TOWARDS something with passion, and not AWAY from something via escape A next step will present itself as if it is a logical, easy choice for you to make immediately. That will lead to other choices. You will start to have a really good time. You will start to feel like the “why” you’ve imagined is happening. The money will follow. BTW, trying to get more money in order to move away from a current situation always fails. Wealth in any aspect of life is dependent on appreciation of something of now, PLUS moving TOWARDS a future that you want. Pushing against present and past keeps us in those conditions. Thanks for this chance to offer a perspective here! ~M

I don't want to be contrary but there is an aspect that seems to be left out. I believe the thing that makes it a law, and that people leave out in most discussions of the Law of Attraction, is that it is in fact not just a positive law. The Law of Attraction is always working and we are always attracting to us what we are and what we are focused in mind and energy upon. I agree that in the Secret, Rhonda says she filmed over 120 hours of interviews and we get to hear less than 2 hours of those edited interviews, so while the movie was a smashing success, there is a lot we are not told. We do not attract what we think about for a moment, or an hour. We do not think in words, we think in images, and most of us clearly have no control over our thoughts and so there is an endless stream of unrelated and disjointed thoughts as relate to our core beliefs and desires. So many of the concepts Rhonda relates in her movie are valid, but many of the examples take people off on tangents instead of helping them understand that it is more about changing the way we see everything, than it is about refocusing our thoughts on just one thing, i.e. money, health, romance. Thanks for your blog article, I mostly agree, except that I think when we bring into the discussion, the full range of effects of our thoughts, we may more easily see it as a consistent law instead of something that only works if we do it right.

Hi Nehama, Brilliantly put my friend! Yes, the laws of science appear to change when moving from matter to energy...manifestation happens quicker because the Prime Intention is Love and Service. That is why I guide people to create from the spiritual realm, which we agree is the highest plane of potential. I was compelled to write this blog after spending time with TLC friends in Puerto Rico last month, and hearing many of the featured teachers in The Secret speak in a way in which I disagreed. (I agree with many more things than I disagreed with by the way.:-) I'm not saying "I'm right", I'm only sharing my personal experiences and those of thousands of clients. The workings of our universe are not explained so neatly as "The Law of Attraction" defines it to be. "I create my own Reality" is a great concept, but a bit selfish when viewed from a higher consciousness. "We are co-creating reality together" is a much more accurate and authentic world-view. I create favorable conditions for specific things to manifest, but I must also realize others are "creating" too, and this affects me and my creations. I love you very much dear friend. Thanks for your genius... Steve

Dear Steve, As always i love your special way to put your massege out and thank you for that. As you know me, i have few things to say regarding some issues in this post: I totally agree that the way people address the law of attraction is insuficient. Even though Kareem may be again at his best playing in a new leege that would open to ex athletes and he may again have the thing his soul is looking for. The best way to understand the law of attraction is to connect it to the law of intention. When you focus on intention - your soul intention - you may find other ways to manifest the thing you intend to. This is why Soul Purpose is so crusial. Once you find and connect to your soul intention the way to manifest it will show. It may not be in a way of becomming that virtuose basketball player - still the way will manifest through intention and connection to soul purpose. Let us remember that the law of attraction as any law is a matter of belief. as we all know proving any law is influenced by the people doing the experiment. we all know that the world was proven to be flat scientifically untill it was proven other wise. For example the law of gravity is influenced by the persons awareness (for example experienced deep meditators can arise or overcome gravity by rising their body few centimeters up even though the law of gravity would calculate them pinned to the flour.) The law of gravity is addresing us as matter. The quantum Phisycs adds another aspect to our being and that is us as energy. Does the law of gravity work on energy as on matter? Again i am happy that you address the soul purpose issue and give people tools to connect to it. and yes with the power of soul purpose and intention that derives from it - we can manifest everything. As always dear Steve, i love the depth you make me get into when listening to you speak. Love, Nehama

Steve, This blog post is beautiful. So eloquent. We were just discussing this very thing last night. When I think about the times where I was truly happy in my life, I can always find a place in my heart where I felt in the service of others, Whether it was to serve or being served. Thank you for being such a wonderful teacher of truth.

Hi Cate,

Thanks for your thoughtful comments.

We never see the world the way IT IS, we see the world the way WE ARE. Every word written or read, not only the words you cite here, morality and suffering,  is subjectively interpreted by everyone...because reality itself is based upon pure subjectivity. No one is truly objective about anything. We all see life though our own filters, beliefs, and biases. The point of this website, and my life-work is to help people move from a fear-based life to love-based living. And to help each other 'clean up' the lens of of inner eye through spiritual discipline and education. Morality in my context means living life using principles of love, or that which I call in my book strong-force attractor principles.

When we do the disciplines, the universe/God/Life raises our consciousness and we get more power to see more truth.

As always I love it when you play...you bring so much to the table.

Much Love, Steve

Steve - nice piece. I agree about the creating value premise. I'm not sure I would use the moral and suffering alleviating words as they are just so subjective. Morality changes over time, it's a human construct like money. Sure when it comes to Truth(s) for the human community I can get that there are some basic moralities that most cultures and time adhere to (or would if they thought about it). I love the idea of putting your attention on raising your vibration, becoming a keeper of the frequency so to speak, and I think you are absolutely correct that the focus on attaining something undermines our ability to actually create it. BECOME the anchor for the vibration and then things will flow. Thanks for the thoughts. Much Love Cate

Hey Will,

I do not  focus on making money. I put every iota of energy into creating unique value for the people I serve (aka clients). Because they feel and receive such unique value, the dollars follow. That's the whole idea behind putting all the emphasis on the 'vibration' of value creation. The universe takes care of the 'attraction'. Since the people I deal with are honorable they reciprocate currency back to me. Make sense?

Peace out,

Stevie D

Bravo Steve, I agree with just about everything you said. In my mind there must always be a balance of spirit, mind and body like you said Kareem might want to play (mind) feel a part of him needs to play (spirit) however his physical being simply wont allow it (body). There is no balance there. Now the part I'm not sure I agree on is the making of money (even though it's obvious I'm the less expierenced one on the subject) I'm conflicted on wether not the want for more money in the first place isn't a selfish instead of soul'fish idea in the first place does the want for more money put a hinderence on ones spiritual growth therefore negating any non-attachment you may be attempting to attain. I don't know just thing's i think about at times, but I hope this was helpful in one way or another at any cost I enjoyed the read. With love, Will
